Signs of Depression in Teenagers
In today's world there are a lot of things that teenagers has to put up with that parents did
not. There is the constant threat of violence in schools, the uncertainty of job
opportunities when they graduate from school, and a myriad of problems which arise
from peer pressure complicate the life of today's teenager. These things, plus a host of
other worries add up to a life which can be plagued with depression. As loving parents,
we should always be on the alert for signs of depression in our teens.
While it is just a part of teenage life to experience certain types of moods swings and just
plain irritability at times, you should always be on the lookout for when the bad times out
number the good. If your teenager begins to have bad moods which never seem to go
away, then it is time to do something about it. You do not want the depression to get to
the point to where it limits the functionality of the child. If left unchecked, depression can
become debilitating in anyone, so teenagers are not immune.
It is not uncommon for buyouts of teenage depression to last and expanded amount of
time. This time will vary depending upon obtained as well as the circumstances which
have brought on the depression. Some teenagers will show signs of depression for only a
few days, while others will it experienced depression for weeks. In severe cases, teenage
depression can last for months or even years. Therefore it is important to get your
teenager diagnosed as soon as you think there may be a problem.
There is a lot going on in the teenager's life today, some of the current events as well as
the hormonal changes their body is going through tends to keep them emotionally off
balance. For this reason it can be rather difficult to diagnose depression in teenagers.
Even so, there are certain signs of depression which are universal no matter what the age
of the individual.
If you believe your teenager is having emotional problems, you should watch them
closely and monitor to see if they have any sudden changes in their eating habits. You
should also keep tabs on how much your child is sleeping. Depression can cause a person
to sleep too much, or it can cause them to sleep little if not all.
If your child suddenly withdrawals from both his family and his friends, then there could
be a problem brewing. A child who's depressed will stop doing the normal things that
they enjoy such as if they stop playing video games or suddenly stop using the telephone.
You should also look for sudden bouts of anger or intense feelings of anxiety with no
known trigger.
If your teenager is showing signs of depression, then no maintenance get help for them as
soon as possible. Your pediatrician should be able to give you all the help and advice that
you need in order to make an informed decision on how to proceed with treatment
options for your child.
